Who we are
We are a South African-based association seeking to honour an 88-year legacy by fostering a globally connected, multi-generational family of alumni that actively empowers the learners of Genadendal. We strive to be more than an association; we are a lifelong support system dedicated to the holistic success of our members and the school, ensuring Emil Weder remains a beacon of excellence for the next decade and beyond.

Comments
When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.
An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
Media
If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

How long we retain your data
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.
What rights you have over your data
If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Media Use, POPIA Compliance & Indemnification Policy
1. POPIA Statement of Consent
In accordance with the Protection of Personal Information Act, No. 4 of 2013 (POPIA), Emil Weder Alumni Association acts as the “Responsible Party.” By visiting and interacting on this alumni platform or attending events, you provide your voluntary, specific, and informed consent for the Organization to process your personal information in the form of photographs, video footage, and audio recordings.
2. Grant of Rights (Media Consent)
You hereby grant the Organization a perpetual, royalty-free, and irrevocable license within the Republic of South Africa and internationally to:
- Capture and store your image/voice during official alumni functions.
- Use such media in the “Alumni Gallery,” newsletters, and official social media channels.
- Archive media for historical record-keeping, a recognized “legitimate interest” under POPIA.
3. Indemnification & Waiver of Claim
You hereby indemnify and hold harmless Emil Weder Alumni Association, its executive committee, employees (if any), and agents against any and all claims, costs, or damages (including consequential loss) arising from:
- Unauthorized Third-Party Use: The Organization cannot be held liable if a third party downloads or misappropriates media from the website.
- Loss of Privacy: You waive the right to seek damages for “infringement of personality” or “invasion of privacy” related to the good-faith publication of event media.
- Content Accuracy: Any claims resulting from captions or tags that may inadvertently misidentify you.
4. User-Generated Content & Third-Party Rights
If you upload media to the portal, you warrant that:
- You have the consent of all identifiable “Data Subjects” (people) in the photo/video, as required by POPIA.
- If the media features minors (under 18), you have obtained the express written consent of a Competent Person (parent/guardian).
- You indemnify the Organization against any legal action taken by persons appearing in your uploaded content.
5. Data Subject Rights (Access and Objection)
Under Sections 23 and 24 of POPIA, you have the right to:
- Request access to the media we hold of you.
- Object to the processing of your image. If you object, the Organization will remove the specific media from the digital platform within a reasonable timeframe, provided it does not compromise historical archives.
- Lodge a complaint with the South African Information Regulator if you believe your personal information is being misused.
6. Limitation of Liability
The website is provided “as is.” While we implement reasonable technical and organizational measures to secure our “Information Assets,” the Organization shall not be liable for any data breaches resulting from circumstances beyond our reasonable control (e.g., sophisticated cyber-attacks).
